Formulae / Concepts Used

Tips
Give two tests to distinguish between:
Acetaldehyde and acetone.

[1]   Choice in 2003
i
With Tollen's reagent: Acetaldehyde gives silver mirror. Acetone does not give this test.
These two tests i.e., Tollen's test and Fehling's test are the specific tests for the aldehydic group.
Since, acetaldehyde contains one aldehydic group it gives positive result with the above two test whereas acetone does not because it contains ketonic group as the functional group.
1.

Observation must be stated with the help of which the sample can be identified in such questions, for example, red precipitate or silver mirror is formed.

2.

Difference in properties of aldehydes with and without a-hydrogen atoms must be emphasised.

3.

Main things to be prepared in Organic Chemistry are:

i

Named reactions

ii

Conversions and

iii

Differentiating chemical tests of compounds.

Questions

Solutions

Theory

Tips

What type of polymer is polyethylene?

[1]
Choice in 1998
Polyethylene is synthetic addition polymer of ethylene

Addition polymers are formed by the combination of alkene monomers to produce a single huge molecule only. Polyethylene is made by repeated addition of ethylene monomers
Important subtopics of this chapter are:
i
Monomers of addition and condensation polymers.
ii
Difference between thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers.
