| Biodiversity is one of the most important wealth of planet not yet recognised as such. Some of the important economic commodities that biodiversity supplies to mankind includes food, medicines, industry, tourism, recreation etc. Values of biodiversity can be broadly categorised as follows : |
| (1) |
Direct Values |
(2) |
Indirect Values |
| |
|
| (1) |
Direct values: It is the direct utilisation of harvested products provided by bio-diversity. They may be of consumptive use value i.e., they do not involve national or international market, and may be of productive use value i.e., product derived from nature are sold both internationally and nationally. |
(2) |
Indirect values: These are the benefits provided by the bio-diversity without affecting natural resources i.e., benefits of waste water treatment, solid waste disposal, eco-tourism. Apart from above general values bio-diversity provides all essential products like food products (plant and animal) medicinal products, timber products, fishery, fossil fuels, fibers for clothing other Industry products such as oil, lubricants, perfumes, fragrance paper, dyes, wax, rubber, resin, poisons, cork, silk, wool, leather and fur. |
| |
A part from above the animals are widely used in agro industries, dairy industries and for transportation |
| |
For all such values we can say that for every product |
| |
Biodiversity is the natural biological capital of the earth. Its conservation is defended in terms of how much it can be of use to humans: biological resources, unknown resources, genetic resources, ecosystem services, tourism and recreation. Thus biodiversity is invaluable to mankind |
